In London, access is the job
Most of what decides how a London driveway goes has nothing to do with the surface. It is whether the lorry can get near the house, where the spoil goes, and how much of it has to travel by barrow.
Delivery and spoil
Controlled parking, narrow streets and nowhere to stand a skip. We plan kerbside delivery and take spoil away as it comes out rather than piling it on the pavement. It is worked out at the survey, not on the morning.
Small areas, honest pricing
A typical terraced frontage here is a fraction of an Essex driveway, but it still needs a crew, a mixer and a delivery. Price per square metre sits higher on a small job, and we say so before quoting rather than after.
London Clay underneath
The same shrink-swell clay that runs under most of Essex runs under here too. It wants a deeper permeable sub-base and edge restraint that holds — especially on a narrow frontage, where the edges are most of the perimeter.
Why permeable matters more here than anywhere
London's surface water drainage runs close to capacity, and front gardens disappearing under impermeable slab is a significant part of why. That is the background to the rule change: since October 2008, laying more than five square metres of impermeable surfacing in a front garden in England has needed planning permission unless the water drains to a permeable area.
A resin bound surface laid on a permeable base is porous. Water goes down through it into the sub-base rather than running off into the street, so it normally falls within permitted development and needs no application. The exceptions are the ones you would expect — a listed building, or a conservation area with an Article 4 direction in force, both of which exist across these boroughs.

Which parts of London do you cover?
The eastern boroughs: Barking, Dagenham, Ilford, Romford, Stratford and Walthamstow. That means Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Redbridge, Newham and Waltham Forest. We come in from Braintree on the A12, so east London is a straightforward run and the rest of the capital is not. If you are in west or south London you want somebody closer, and we will say so.
My front garden is small. Is it worth doing?
Usually yes, but be aware the cost does not scale down in a straight line. A fifteen square metre frontage still needs the same crew, the same mixer and the same delivery as a job three times the size, so the price per square metre on a small London frontage sits higher than the headline rate. We would rather tell you that up front than have it appear on the quote. The flip side is that small areas are quick, often a single day.
There is nowhere to park a lorry on our street. Is that a problem?
It is the most common constraint we deal with in London, and it is a planning question rather than an obstacle. Terraced streets, controlled parking and no room for a skip mean the day has to be organised differently: kerbside delivery, spoil away as it comes out, materials staged rather than dumped.
